Otters, Martin Have A Grand Time In Split At CSUDH

Jacob Martin hits CSUMB’s fifth grand slam of 2022 in Game 2 win

CARSON, Calif. — Jacob Martin (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College) drove home seven runs with a grand slam and a 3–run blast in CSUMB's final two at bats to help the No. 17 Otters earn a doubleheader split with Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday at Toro Field.

Martin's bat carried CSUMB to a 9–4 win in the nightcap. Dominguez Hills took the opener, 6–1.

The split leaves CSUMB at 29–11 overall and 24–7 in the CCAA. The Otters maintain their 1 1/2 game lead over Chico State in the CCAA race. Chico split with Cal State San Bernardino Friday afternoon.

CSUDH (22–15, 17–10) slips back to fourth place after Cal Poly Pomona swept Stanislaus State to move within 4 1/2 games of the Otters.

The Otter offense had trouble finding its footing early Friday after Isaac Mullins and Josh Castillo combined for a 3–hitter in the opener. Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) hit his fourth homer of 2022 to account for CSUMB's run.

Nathan Flores (Orange Lutheran HS/Santa Ana College) got the Otters going in the second game with a solo shot in the third, but it wasn't until Martin's sixth inning bomb that CSUMB claimed its first lead of the day. Hartojo followed Martin with his second homer of the afternoon to extend the Otter lead before Martin's 3–run bomb in the seventh put the game on ice.

Ryan Platero (San Benito HS/MPC) went six innings, striking out four, to improve to 5–1.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Alberto Luevano's 2–run single gave the Toros a 5–1 lead in the seventh.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Jacob Martin and Nico Hartojo hit back-to-back jacks to give the Otters a 6–2 lead in the sixth inning.

HAVING A GRAND TIME… Jacob Martin's sixth in slam was a school record fifth by the Otters already in 2022. Prior to this season, the Otters had never hit more than two slams in a season.

MARTIN IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT… Jacob Martin drove in a career–high seven runs in Friday's Game 2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. That mark ranks No. 2 in the Otter record book for RBI in a game. Kevin Davidson set the standard with eight in a win at Cal Poly Pomona on Apr. 3, 2016.

GAME 1 EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Nico Hartojo (4).

GAME 2 EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Nico Hartojo (5), Arthur Soto (1). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Jacob Martin 2 (3,4), Nico Hartojo (5), Nathan Flores (4)

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will try for the series win when they play the final game of their 4–game series Saturday at 11 a.m.
