Big Inning Propels Otters To 8–1 Win At Sonoma State

Rubottom’s slam, Bouillerce’s arm lead Otters to series–clinching victory

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Chris Rubottom (Los Alamitos HS/Long Beach CC) hit his second grand slam in three days to support another strong outing from Nick Bouillerce as Cal State Monterey Bay clinched a series win with an 8–1 victory over Sonoma State Sunday at Seawolf Diamond.

CSUMB improved to 11–6 overall and 6–2 in CCAA play by taking 3–of–4 from the Seawolves. The Otters own a share of first place with Cal State San Bernardino in the early conference standings.

Rubottom's slam capped a 6–run Otter sixth inning, breaking a 1–1 tie. That was more than enough support for Bouillerce, a sophomore lefty transfer from MPC, to improve to a team best 3–1 this season. He scatted three hits over six innings, fanning three.

Michael Potter (Elk Grove/Sheldon HS), Joseph Standley (Nolanville, Texas/Hope Christian HS) and Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/Chaffey College) closed the game by each throwing a perfect inning of relief. Potter and Standley each struck out two of the three batters they faced while Fokken needed just 10 pitches to close the ninth.

Rubottom led the 10–hit Otter offense by going 3–for–4 with a double, the aforementioned slam, and five RBI. Freshman PJ Kissee (Gilroy/Live Oak HS) added his first collegiate home run, a solo shot in the ninth inning, while Nathan Flores (Orange Lutheran HS/Santa Ana College) went 2–for–5 with a double.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Chris Rubottom's grand slam put a cap on a 6–run Otter sixth, giving CSUMB an insurmountable 7–1 lead.

ANOTHER STRONG CCAA START… The Otters are 6–2 (or better) in CCAA play for the fifth time in 11 seasons under Head Coach Walt White.

RUBOTTOM IS A MONSTER… Chris Rubottom finished a monster series against Sonoma State with another monster game Sunday. He finished the 4–game set 7–for–17 (.412) with two grand slams, three total home runs, and 11 RBI. He also doubled and scored five runs.

A THIEF IN THE DAY… Brady Miguel was a terror on the base paths in CSUMB's series win at Sonoma State, finishing with six stolen bases in six attempts. He is now a perfect 8–for–8 on the basepaths this season.

THE START OF SOMETHING SPECIAL… Cal State Monterey Bay's current starting rotation of Ethan McRae, Chris Tonna, Ryan Platero and Nick Bouillerce has something special going to start CCAA play. The quartet is 5–0 with a combined 2.51 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 43 innings pitched.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Nick Bouillerce (W [3–1), 6.0 IP, 3H, R); Chris Rubottom (3x4, 2B, HR [3, GS], 5RBI); PJ Kissee (1x2, HR [1, solo]), Nathan Flores (2x5, 2B, R, RBI).

THE LAST WORD… "Winning on the road in the CCAA is not easy. I'm proud of the way the team came back today and proud of the way we played all series. The CCAA challenges you every weekend and we have another big series coming up against a talented Cal Poly Pomona squad." – Cal State Monterey Bay Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex to host perennial regional power Cal Poly Pomona for a 4–game series. The action begins with a 6 p.m. first pitch Friday (Mar. 11) evening.
