Platero’s Gem Earns Otters Twinbill Split With East Bay

Rayn Platero tosses 3–hitter to lead CSUMB to 3–0 win in nightcap

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore Ryan Platero (San Bentito HS/MPC threw a 3–hit shutout in the nightcap to help Cal State Monterey Bay earn a doubleheader split with Cal State East Bay Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Platero's gem earned the Otters a 3–0 victory. It took some of the sting out of the first game, which saw the Pioneers rally to score three in the eighth and one in the ninth for a 6–5 victory.

Platero's clean sheet was the first complete game shutout by an Otter pitcher since Ryan Arambula blanked San Francisco State 6–0 on Apr. 15, 2017. The Otter sophomore scattered three singles and struck out six against just one walk.

Jason Ajamian's (Pasadena/CSUN) sac fly in the first inning scored Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College), giving Platero all of the run support he would need. Ajamian added some insurance with a 2–run single in the fifth.

Everything seemed to be going CSUMB's way in the opener as it scored five unanswered runs to overcome a 2–0 deficit. But the usually reliable Otter bullpen couldn't secure the lead as a 3–run homer by Francisco Pedraza in the eighth tied the game before Matthew O'Mahony's RBI single in the ninth gave the Pioneers the win.

Ajamian led the Otter offense, going 3–for–6 with three RBI. Lindemann and Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) collected CSUMB's only extra base hits with a double and triple respectively in Game 1.

The Otters will try to pick up a series win Sunday when they close their 4–game set against East Bay with a single game at noon. Please note that first pitch has been moved from its original 11 a.m. slot.
