Otters Let One Slip Away Loss To Cal Poly Pomona

Long Otter cold spell helps Pomona climb out of 16–point hole for 71–68 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — With the exception of a pair of big runs, Cal state Monterey Bay couldn't find its range Thursday night while dropping a critical 71–68 decision to Cal Poly Pomona in The Kelp Bed.
The loss leaves CSUMB at 13–7 over and 12–5 in the CCAA. The win locks CSUMB into no worse than the fourth seed in the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Cal Poly Pomona (12–8, 8–8) clinched the No. 6 seed thanks to Cal State East Bay's loss to Stanislaus Thursday night.

Senior forward Noah Stapes (San Jose/St. Francis HS) led the Otters with 17 points. Jordan May (Troutdale, Ore./Reynolds HS) scored all 16 of his points in the first half. Kyle Johnson (Point Loma HS) chipped in his second double–double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

The Otters raced to a 16–point lead, 33–17, late in the first half when Otter shooting went sideways. They converted on just 2–of–9 from the field over the final four minutes of the first half then began that second half shooting 2–for–13 as Pomona turned the 16–point deficit into a 49–41 lead.

Stapes helped CSUMB right the ship, connecting on three consecutive 3–pointers as the Otters retook the lead at 50–49. But an 0–for–7 spurt followed and Pomona was able to hold on for the win.

CSUMB will play a game with huge NCAA Regional implications Saturday when it hosts No. 6 Cal State San Bernardino for a 3 p.m. tip. It will be the final regular season game for the Otters before heading to the CCAA Tournament next week in Arcata.
