Otters Survive Stanislaus Scare, Hang On 56–54

Tommy Kramer scores a career–high 19 as Otters maintain grip on second place

TURLOCK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay didn't earn any style points Saturday night in Turlock, but the Otters found a way to grind out a 56–54 win against a determined Stanislaus State squad in Fitzpatrick Arena.

CSUMB improved to 12–5 overall and 11–3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Otters have guaranteed they will finish with their best winning percentage since joining the NCAA for the 2004–05 season and their second–best winning percentage of all time. The 1998–99 Otters went 26–7 while a member of the NAIA.

Junior guard Tommy Kramer (Amador Valley HS) scored a career–high 19 points, none bigger than a driving layup with 1:18 remaining in regulation that gave the Otters a 53–52 lead. Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Aust.) knocked down a three on the next CSUMB possession and then the Otters held on for dear life.

After a pair of free throws got Stanislaus back within two, an Otter turnover and the missed front end of a 1–and–1 opportunity gave Stanislaus two cracks to tie of take the lead in the final 30 seconds, but the CSUMB defense held.

In addition to Kramer — who also shared the team lead in rebounds with a career–high seven — Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Aust.) scored 10 points and grabbed seven boards while Jordan May (Troutdale, Ore./Reynolds HS) chipped in 12 points.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Levi Frankland secured the rebound of Marlon Short's put-back attempt of a missed Luis Salgado 3–pointer as time expired.

AND THEN THERE WERE TWO… With Cal State San Marcos idle due to COVID, CSUMB and Chico State now share second place in the CCAA race at 11–3. Chico needed overtime to defeat San Francisco State at home, 82–79. Cal State San Bernardino currently owns a 1–game lead in the CCAA race with four games remaining.

HOT AND COLD… Saturday was a night of streaks for the Otters. CSUMB started the game 2–for–16 from the floor as Stanislaus built a 16–8 lead. But the Otters got hot enough to forge a 22–2 run that gave them their biggest lead (30–18) late in the first half.

ON THE REBOUND… Another big effort on the boards helped the Otters overcome an off–shooting night as they out–rebounded Stanislaus 48–32. It marked the 13th time in 18 games the Otters have come out on the good side of the rebounding battle this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Tommy Kramer 19; REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson/Tommy Kramer 7; ASSISTS: Dre Ferguson 3; BLOCKS: Andrew Ferguson 2; STEALS: Jailen Nelson 1.

THE LAST WORD… "We're not perfect; in fact, we have many flaws. But, those guys in uniform are together, they really love to compete and they have a knack for making plays when it counts." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their final regular season roadtrip with a visit to Southern California to meet Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday (Feb. 17). The men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action.

GO OTTERS!
