Golden Eagles Prove Too Hot To Handle in 82-65 Defeat

Cal State L.A. makes 16 of 27 3-point attempts

LOS ANGELES — Cal State L.A. came out on fire and never allowed Cal State Monterey Bay to close the gap in an 82–65 Golden Eagle victory Thursday night in CSULA's University Gym.

L.A. made an incredible 15 of its first 20 3–point attempts as it built a 49–26 lead by halftime. The Golden Eagles cooled off a bit in the second half, but the Otters were able to trim just six points off the deficit.

Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) played a season–low 25 minutes but still led three Otters in double figures with 16 points. Freshman center Charles Johnston (Sydney, NSW, Australia) reached double figures for the first time in his young collegiate career with 10 points. J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) added 10 points and a team–high six rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Kyjuan Cannady layup gave L.A. a 75–47 lead with 9:27 remaining.

A BIT TOO HOT TO HANDLE… Cal State L.A. 59.3 percent (16-of-27) night from beyond the arc was the best shooting night by an Otter opponent this season. It was the best shooting game by an opponent since Chico went 15-for-24 (.625) on Dec. 12, 2019, a span of 47 games. It's worth noting that the Golden Eagles began the night in the bottom half of the conference table by shooting just 32.8 percent from long range.

WALL IS THE HOTTEST OF ALL… Despite L.A.'s prolific shooting night, Joe Wall continues to be the top 3–point shooter in the CCAA following Thursday's action. He went 5-for-13 from long range Thursday night. Wall leads the CCAA in both 3–point shooting percentage (.463) and 3–point field goals made per game (4.4).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Joe Wall 16. REBOUNDS: J.R. Schilling 6. ASSISTS: Ameere Britton 4. BLOCKS: Damjan Agovic 1. STEALS: Levi Frankland 3

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will finish their 2–game swing through Southern California with a Saturday tip at Cal State San Marcos. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
