Short–Handed Otters Upend Stanislaus In Four

Isabel Ultsch, Aly Fullbright step in and team doesn’t miss a beat

SEASIDE, Calif. — Playing without two starters for the second consecutive match didn't slow down the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team, which won for the second consecutive outing with a 25–19, 19–25, 25–23, 26–24 victory over Stanislaus State Friday night in The Kelp Bed.

Isabella Ultsch (Richmond, Calif./Siena College) posted her Otter career high with 11 kills starting her second consecutive match on the right side. Setter Aly Fullbright (Huntington Beach Edison HS) made her second consecutive start at setter and chipped in her third double–double of the season with 36 assists and a team–high 13 digs.

CSUMB never trailed while winning the opening set. Stanislaus evened the match by winning seven of the final eight points to break an 18–18 tie in Set 2.

The the teams found themselves tied at 18–18 again in the third set. This time, a 5–1 run gave the Otters the separation they needed to finish the set and take a 2–1 lead in the match.

The Otters led for virtually the entire fourth set until Stanislaus rallied from a 22–19 deficit to earn a pair of set points at 24–22. That's when senior outside hitter Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) stepped up for CSUMB, putting down four consecutive kills to close out the match.
Honberger finished with a team–high 12 kills. Freshman defensive specialist Dani Smith (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadow HS) matched her season–high with 13 digs. Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) led the net defense with three blocks.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHENKaylie Honberger put away the last of four consecutive kills to rally CSUMB from down 24–22 in the fourth set.

STEP ASIDE, COACH… Playing in the next-to-last home match of her career, senior libero Sam Chavez pushed aside Head Coach Courtney (Taubert) Materazzi to tie her for the No. 12 spot on the Otter career digs list in Friday's win over Stanislaus State. Chavez's 11 digs give her 806 for her career, equaling Materazzi, who compiled her total playing as an Otter from 2004–07.

SHE'S ACES… With three aces in Friday's win over Stanislaus State, Kaylie Honberger moved up to No. 14 on the Otter career aces list with 65. She passed Alà Olson and Lindsay Molinaro, who each had 63.

TOP 20 NOLTE… With three blocks in Friday's win over Stanislaus State, Mikayla Nolte took sole possession of the No. 20 spot on the Otter single–season blocks list with 73. She needs 11 blocks over her final three matches to earn a spot in the Top 10.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kaylie Honberger 15.5; KILLS: Kaylie Honberger 12; BLOCKS: Mikayla Nolte 3; ACES: Kaylie Honberger 3; DIGS: Aly Fullbright/Dani Smith 13.

THE LAST WORD… "Proud of our fight against a great defensive and blocking team tonight. We really fought to end in close games — something we've struggled with at points this season. Big shot out to all of our DS's tonight who really kept the ball alive and to Sav for swinging big and serving aggressively at the end of the match." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will host Chico State in their final home match of 2022 Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
