SEASIDE, Calif. — Three goals, all as the result of set pieces, provided the only scoring as Cal State San Marcos overcame and early penalty to hand Cal State Monterey Bay a 2–1 defeat Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (4–4–3, 1–2–1 CCAA) took the lead in the 17th minute when a perfectly struck Mitsy Ramirez (Richmond/UC–Colorado Springs) helped draw a penalty when a San Marcos (5–4–2, 3–1–0) defender ran over Ariana Palomo in the box. Freshman Grace Moeder (Torrance HS) stepped confidently to the spot and tucked her first collegiate goal inside the post.

The visitors had the better of the run of play, however, and needed just three minutes after the restart to find the equalizer. Sierra Moore lofted a free kick into the middle of the Otter box. Otter keeper Maleni Morales came way off her line in an attempt to punch the ball away but couldn't get there before Jenna Frankina was able to head softly into an unguarded goal.

The Cougars scored the match–winner 18 minutes from time when Claire Hernandez nodded home a Jenna Mendoza far post corner.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Cory Greer's cross just missed the head of Amelia McManus at the far post in the 83rd minute. It was CSUMB's final chance to find the tying goal.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… With her goal from the spot Sunday against Cal State San Marcos, Grace Moeder became the fourth Otter to score her first collegiate goal this season, She joins Jazmine Casteneda, Andria Hernandez and Tiger Rendon in the rookie goal scorer's club.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Maleni Morales earned her second collegiate clean sheet in Thursday's draw with Biola. Her first shutout came last season in a win over Holy Names University (Sept. 16, 2021).

CORNERING THE MARKET… Sunday's unusual stat of the match was Cal State Monterey Bay did not attempt a corner kick versus Cal State San Marcos. It marked the first time Since Sept. 14, 2018 (at UC San Diego) that the Otters did not attempt a corner kick in a match.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head back across the parking lot to Cardinale Stadium to host San Francisco State for a CCAA doubleheader Thursday (Oct. 6). The women will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. with the men scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff.
