MEN'S BASKETBALL NOTES at CAL STATE L.A.

SEASIDE, Calif. —
The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team heads south looking to build off the momentum of last weekend's home sweep when it travels to Los Angeles for a rematch at Cal State L.A. Thursday (Jan. 27) in the CSULA University Gym.

CSUMB (8–4 overall, 7–2 CCAA) is coming off its first–ever win over a Top 10 ranked program when Andrew Ferguson posted his fourth double–double of the season to lead CSUMB past No. 7 Chico State 64–61 last Saturday in The Kelp Bed. Kyle Johnson added 11 rebounds and Jailen Nelson scored 10, included the trey that put the Otters up for good at 62–61 with 1:15 remaining.

The Otters continued the best start in their CCAA history (2005–present) by improving to 7–2 in conference play. Prior to this season, CSUMB's best CCAA record through nine games with 5–4 during the 2004–05 and 2008–09 seasons.

No CCAA team has been hit harder by COVID protocols than the Golden Eagles, who have not played since an 88–82 win over Sonoma State on Jan. 6 (missing their last five games). That win over the Seawolves snapped a 7–game CCAA losing streak stretching back to the 2019–20 season. Sr./G Elisha Duplechan leads a top–heavy scoring chart at 17.0 ppg (No. 3 CCAA). Jr./F Adrease Jackson adds 12.9 ppg and a team–high 8.8 rpg (No. 3 CCAA).

The last time these teams met, Levi Frankland exploded for 22 of his career–high 31 points in the second half to help the Otters rally past Cal State L.A., 83–73, Dec. 11 in The Kelp Bed. Jordan May added 14 points while Andrew Ferguson pulled down nine boards. Lyrik Shreiner came off the bench to lead L.A. with 16 points.
