Otters Shake Off The Rust With 61–51 Win Over Stanislaus

Kyle Johnson leads the way with his first collegiate double–double

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team (7–4, 6–2 CCAA) shook off the rust from its unplanned, 2–week hiatus with a 61–51 win over Stanislaus State Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Sophomore Kyle Johnson (Point Loma HS) led the way with a 13–point, 11–rebound double–double while freshman Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) came off the bench to match Johnson's 13 points. Nelson also chipped in a game–high four assists.

The Otters got off to a rocky start in their first game since Jan. 6 by turning the ball over on their first three possessions. With the early gifts, Stanislaus jumped to an 11–5 lead.

CSUMB responded with a 12–2 run to move ahead for the first time at 17–13. The Otters held the lead for all but 48 seconds over the final 22 minutes, building their first double–digit advantage six minutes into the second half. The Warriors never got closer than eight points for the balance of the game.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Kyle Johnson made the first of two free throws with 37 seconds remaining to push the Otter lead to 60–51.

OTTERS STAY HOT… The Otters continued the best start in their CCAA history (2005–present) by improving to 6–2 in conference play with Thursday's 61–51 win over Stanislaus State. Prior to this season, CSUMB's best CCAA record through eight games with 5–3 during the 2004–05 and 2008–09 seasons.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB, FRESHMAN… While Jailen Nelson has scored in double figures in eight of his 11 collegiate appearances, Thursday's 61–51 win over Stanislaus State marked the first time he has led the team in scoring (finishing with 13 points). For what it's worth, he has led the Otters in rebounding once and in assists three times.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB, SOPHOMORE… Kyle Johnson joined Jailen Nelson and Andrew Ferguson in the double–double club with his 13–point, 11–rebound effort in Thursday's win over Stanislaus State. It was the first double–double of his collegiate career.

ON THE REBOUND, PART I… The Otters pulled down a season–high 49 rebounds in Thursday's 61–51 win over Stanislaus State. Their previous high was 47 in a win over Western Oregon on Nov. 13.

ON THE REBOUND, PART II… The Otters out–rebounded Stanislaus State 49–34 in Thursday's 61–51 victory. It marked the eighth time in 11 games that the Otters have out–rebounded their opponent while the plus–15 margin was their second largest of the season.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their weekend homestand by hosting No. 7 ranked Chico State Saturday (Jan. 22). Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. as the second game of men's/women's doubleheader action.
