Otters Explode For 24 Runs, 26 Hits To Sweep East Bay

CSUMB wins 19–4 and 5–3 to secure series victory over the Pioneers

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay ran its winning streak to a season–best six games and secured a series win over Cal State East Bay by sweeping a doubleheader from the Pioneers, 19–4 and 5–3, Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Splash innings were the order of the day for the Otter offense, which put crooked numbers on the board in six of its 14 at bats Saturday. The explosions helped CSUMB jump to leads of 9–0 in Game 1 and 5–0 in Game 2.

Junior outfielder Nathan Flores (Tustin/Santa Ana College) enjoyed his best day as an Otter, finishing the doubleheader 4–for–6 with a pair of doubles, three runs and two RBI. Junior center fielder Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) also had a big day, going 3–for–7 with three runs, five RBI and his first home run of the season.

Joining Guerra in the long ball club Saturday were Adrian Collazo (Ramona/Palomar College), Cooper Smith (Salinas/Cabrillo College) and Jacob Martin (Bloomington/Chaffey College). All four homered in the opening game.

Although the Otters made an error in each game, defense came to the rescue several times, especially in the nightcap. CSUMB turned three double plays in each game. The Otters escaped a bases–loaded, 1–out jam in the second inning of Game 2 thanks to a 6–4–3 double play and ended the game with another twin killing with the tying run at the plate.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… RBI singles by Cooper Smith and Jacob Martin highlighted a 5–run second inning that gave the Otters a 9–0 lead.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… closer Parker Fokken coaxed a pop fly to shallow right from Francisco Pedraza. Ryan McSwain tarried too far off first base as Kokko Figueiredo turned and threw behind him to complete the game–ending double play.

AN OTTER SIX PACK… CSUMB ran its winning streak to a season–best six games with Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Cal State East Bay. Its CSUMB's longest streak since winning eight in a row from Feb. 17–Mar. 1, 2019.

OTTER OFFENSE EXPLODES AGAIN… The 19 runs scored by CSUMB in Saturday's opener versus Cal State East Bay were the fifth–most ever by the Otters. Oddly enough, that total ranks only No. 2 this season. CSUMB exploded with 20 runs in a 20–2 win over Azusa Pacific on Feb. 8.

HO–HUM, 17 HITS… CSUMB's 17 hits in Game 1 not only don't make the CSUMB Top 10 they rank just No. 4 so far this season. The Otters had 22 hits in wins over Azusa Pacific (Feb. 8) and Cal State L.A. (Feb. 15). They also posted 19 hits at Biola University (Feb. 1).

NOT SO HO–HUM, FOUR HOME RUNS… CSUMB's four home runs in Game 1 tied for the second most in a game in Otter history. They pnly time they hit more, they belted five in a win over Stanislaus State on Mar. 4, 2016.

MIGUEL KEEPS MOTORING… Freshman Brady Miguel keeps motoring along in his outstanding rookie season. He finished the day 5–for–9 to run his hitting streak to a personal best eight games and his reached base streak to a team season–high 16 games. He'll enter Sunday's series finale at East Bay hitting a team–high .380.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Greg Steinbeck (W [3–0], 5.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, K, 2 BB); Parker Fokken (Sv [4], 1.0 IP, H, 0 R); Kyle Guerra (3x7, HR [1], 3 R, 5 RBI, SB); Cooper Smith (3x6, HR [1], 3 R, 4 RBI, SB); Jacob Martin 3x6, 2B, HR [2], 2 R, 3 RBI); Adrian Collazo (1x3, HR [1], 2 R, RBI); Nathan Flores (4x6, 2 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game, Battle of the Bays series at Cal State East Bay Sunday with a noon first pitch.
