Tooley’s Steal And Sprint Give Otters Dramatic Win

Otters complete sweep of SoCal trip with 74–72 win at Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. — An incredible hustle play as time expired by senior guard Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) lifted Cal State Monterey Bay to a 74–72 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday at the Torodome.

Tooley picked the pocket of Wonder Smith with four seconds remaining and sprinted coast–to–coast to attempt the game–winning layup. Toro guard Nick Kornieck hammered him as the clock hit zero — the officials eventually put 4/10th of a second back — and Tooley calmly sank both free throws to give the Otters the victory.

Just seconds before the frenzied finish, Tooley, who finished a strong game with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists, had missed a potential tie–breaking layup. Nevertheless, he hustled back to strip Smith from behind and play the hero's role.

Dominguez Hills led for most of the game until six different Otters scored in a 15–0 run midway through the second half, turning a 59–52 deficit into 67–59 lead.

Junior swingman Damian Wilson (Inglewood/Taft HS) led the Otters with 22 points. J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) added a game–high eight rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Charlie Tooley made a pair of free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining to break a 72–72 tie.

HOW SWEEP IT IS, PART I… With wins at Cal State L.A. (103–97) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (74–72), the Otter men earned their first road sweep since defeating these same two teams on Feb. 13–14, 2015.

HOW SWEEP IT IS, PART II… The men weren't the only Otter basketball team that got the brooms out this weekend as the women also swept the Cal State L.A./Cal State Dominguez Hills trip. It's the first time the Otters combined to win all four games in a weekend since they both defeated UC San Diego and Cal State East Bay Dec. 3–4, 2010.

HOW SWEEP IT IS, PART III… The CSUMB men and women combined to sweep a weekend roadtrip for the first time in the history of Otter basketball.

FROM DOWNTOWN… The Otters made nine more 3–pointers in Saturday's win at Dominguez Hills, giving them 211 for the season, a mark that already ranks No. 5 in the CSUMB record book. If they maintain their current pace, the Otters will finish the regular season with 257 treys. That would break the school record of 254 made in 2017–18.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Damian Wilson 22; REBOUNDS: J.R. Schilling 8; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson/Tommy Kramer/Charlie Tooley 3; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Tommy Kramer 2.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm really proud to be coaching this group of guys. They showed a tremendous amount of toughness today when they could have easily given up. As a team, we are starting to find different ways to win, after spending the first half of the season finding different ways to lose." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to The Kelp Bed for the second installment of the Battle of the Bays versus Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Feb. 15. The men will tip-off at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
