Otters Bats Roar To Life, Complete Sweep Of No. 13 Azusa Pacific

The 20–2 rout featured 22 hits, 33 total bases and 18 RBI

SEASIDE, Calif. — Pitching carried the day in No. 22 Cal State Monterey Bay's first two wins over No. 13 Azusa Pacific in their key early season series. Saturday, the pitching remained strong as Otter bats roared to life to complete the sweep with a 20–2 win at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (3–3 overall) completed a series sweep of a nationally–ranked opponent for the second time in program history. The 20 runs scored and 22 hits both rank No. 3 all–time in the Otter record book. The 18 RBI rank No. 4 on the Otter single–game list, as do their 33 total bases, while the six doubles tie for sixth place.

The Otters jumped on the board early when Kyle Dean (San Diego/BYU) broke the seal with an RBI single that plated Chase Lindemann Santa Clarita/Hartnell College) in the first. Adrian Collazo's (Ramona/Palomar College) 2–run double highlighted a 3–run Otter third.

CSUMB blew the game open with an 8–run sixth inning. Lindemann's 2–run double was the star in that one. Jackson State transfer Sam Nastari (Whittier/Monte Vista HS) hit a pinch–hit, 3–run homer in his first Otter at bat in the seventh inning. Nicholas Napoli (Fresno/MPC) capped the scoring with an RBI double in the eighth.

Senior Levi Noddin (San Leandro/Chabot College), in a scheduled 3–inning start, picked up the win. Four Otter relievers combined to strike out seven in six innings of 1–run relief.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jacob Martin's RBI double in the fourth inning answered APU's filal run in the top half of the frame, giving the Otters a 6–2 lead.

HOME SWEET HOME… The Otter Sports Complex has proven quite the friendly confines to the Otters as of late. CSUMB is 85–34 (.714) at home in its last 5+ seasons. The Otters have never had a losing record at home in 9+ seasons under Head Coach Walt White, compiling a 151–86 (.637) home record over that span.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… CSUMB picked up its first series sweep of the season with Saturday's 20–2 win over Azusa Pacific. It marked CSUMB's first series sweep since taking four from Cal State Dominguez Hills Mar. 29–31, 2019.

LIN DA MAN… Chase Lindemann has sizzled in his first six games as an Otter. After finishing Satirday's 20–2 win over No. 13 Azusa Pacific with two hits, a double, two runs and two RBI, he has now hit safely in all six of his Otter appearances. The season is young, but he is hitting .565 (13–for–23) with six extra–base hits so far.

GIANT KILLERS… CSUMB's sweep of Azusa Pacific was its second over a nationally–ranked opponent. The Otters also swept a 3–game series from (then) No. 24 Point Loma University to open the 2018 season (Feb. 8–10). It's CSUMB's third series win over a nationally–ranked opponent in the last five seasons.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Levi Noddin (W [1–0] 3.0 IP,3 H, 1 R); Sam Nastari (1x1, HR [1]), R, 3 RBI); Brady Miguel (3x5, 2B, 2 R, RBI); Kokko Figueiredo (3x5, SF, 3 R, 2 RBI); Adrian Collazo (2x4, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI); Jacob Martin (3x4, 2B, R, 2 RBI); Aaron Halpert (1x2, 3B, 2 R, RBI); Nicholas Napoli (1x1, 2B, RBI).

THE LAST WORD… "This was a great series win for us and a great response after a disappointing first weekend. APU is a talented ball club, so for us to come out and play the way we did makes it that much more significant. Our pitching was able to handle a very potent APU lineup and show what our staff is capable of. Offensively, we were patient and made them work hard to get us out. We had some timely hits and a number of our guys had big at bats in key moments throughout the series. I'm proud of our effort and overall play this weekend. We will enjoy it, but we get back to work on Monday to prepare for CCAA play against an historically strong Cal State LA program." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road to open CCAA play with a 4–game series at Cal State L.A. Feb. 14–16.
