Otters Trade Late Rallies With L.A. In 9–7 Setback

Kyle Guerra drives in three; Kyle Dean runs hitting streak to nine games

LOS ANGELES — Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State L.A. traded late rallies in their series finally Sunday afternoon. L.A.'s rally was the one that stuck as the Golden Eagles held on for a 9–7 win at Reeder Field.

Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) capped a 4–run Otter first with a bases–clearing double to stake the Otters to an early lead. CSUMB still led 5–2 into the seventh inning when the wheels came off. Consecutive bases–loaded, walks with no outs put CSUMB behind the eight ball. Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/Chaffey College) came in and did wizard's work to put out the fire without further damage, but L.A. had taken a 6–5 lead.

L.A. scored three more runs in the eighth with the help of a walk, a hit batter, a passed ball and two wild pitches before the Otter offense almost pulled the game out of the fire.

An Adrian Collazo (Ramona HS/Palomar College) pinch–hit single plated one run and left the bases–loaded with nobody out in the Otter ninth. But the Golden Eagles escaped with the help of a 6–4–3 double play as the Otter comeback fell two runs short.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Micah Hee coaxed Brady Miguel to ground to short for the final out. Miguel represented the tying run.

THE ROAD IS A HARSH MISTRESS… After setting a school record by going 17–8 on the road in 2019, CSUMB is off to a slow start away from the Otter Sports Complex in 2020. CSUMB is 1–6 in its first seven road games this season.

EXTRA, EXTRA, PART I… With three more doubles Sunday at Cal State L.A., the Otters have at least one extra base hit in all 10 games this season. In fact, the Otters are averaging 3.6 extra–base hits per game so far in 2020.

EXTRA, EXTRA, PART II… The Otters opened the 2019 season with at least one extra–base hit in 25 consecutive games.

SPEAKING OF STREAKS… Chase Lindemann (1–for–5) and Kokko Figueiredo (2–for–3) each has reached safely in all 10 games to start the 2020 campaign. After going hitless in the opener, Kyle Dean ran his current hitting streak to nine games with a first–inning single Sunday.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Kyle Guerra (2x4, 2B, R, 3 RBI); Charlie Nasuti (1x1, 2B, 3 R, RBI); Kokko Figureiredo (2x3, 2B,  2 BB, R).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to begin a 4–game series with perennial contender Chico State Friday (Feb. 21). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
