Otters Pick Up Huge Road W With 80–76 Battle of the Bays Victory

Andrew Ferguson posts first collegiate double–double with 19 points, 12 boards

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay picked up a huge road win, using a well–rounded effort to take an 80–76 decision in the Battle of the Bays Saturday at Cal State East Bay's Pioneer Gym.

Sophomore Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Australia) recorded CSUMB's first double–double of the season with career highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) added 21 points, powered by 5–of–7 shooting from 3–point range.

This one was destined to go down to the wire with neither side able to take the game by the scruff of the neck. The Otters opened an 8–point lead at 39–31 late in the first half, and that was as close as either side came to taking control.

After a Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff/Simpson Univ.) free throw snapped a 58–58 with 11 minutes remaining, the Otters jealously guarded their slim advantage until Justin Vigil's 3–pointer gave East Bay its final lead at 76–75 with 65 seconds left. But a brilliant feed from Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) freed Ferguson for a bunny layup to put CSUMB back on top.

The Otter defense added a pair of stops while Ferguson added a dunk and a layup in the final 20 seconds to account for the final score.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Ant Navarette missed a 3–pointer for East Bay as time expired.

WE LOVE THE 80s: The 80s have been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters in recent history. With their 80–76 win Saturday at East Bay, CSUMB owns a 46–9 (.836) mark in its last 55 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation games dating to the 2007–08 season.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE…ROAD? Saturday's 80–76 win at Cal State East Bay was CSUMB's first road victory in nearly two full seasons. CSUMB's last win in a true road (not neutral site) game was a 78–76 overtime victory at UC San Diego on Dec. 8, 2017. The Otters snapped an 0–26 run on the road over that span.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE THE FUN… Andrew Ferguson's 19–point, 12–rebound double–double Saturday at East Bay was the first of his career and the first by an Otter this season. It's the first by an Otter since Joseph Bosetti went for 17 and 10 against San Francisco State on Feb. 16, 2019.

STREAK SNAPPED A SIX… Saturday's win snapped a 6–game East Bay winning streak in the Battle of the Bays, men's basketball edition. CSUMB's last win in Pioneer Gym was a 76–65 decision on Feb. 27, 2016.

FROM DOWNTOWN: After making 11 more from beyond the arc at Cal State East Bay, the Otters are on pace to tie the school record with 254 3–pointers in 2019–20. They made 242 3–pointers last season, good for No. 3 on the CSUMB single–season list. The Otters have made 617 3–pointers in two–plus seasons under Isaac Williams, including a record 254 in 2017–18.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charlie Tooley 21; REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson 12; ASSISTS: Charlie Tooley/Damian Wilson 3; BLOCKS: Andrew Ferguson/Mike Johnson 1; STEALS: Damian Wilson 2.

THE LAST WORD… ""It was nice to get back on the winning side of things tonight. But, honestly, it was a far better sign for our program that we played and acted as a team all day."" – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed to begin the second round of CCAA play by hosting Sonoma State Thursday (Jan. 16). The men will tip–off at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
