Daniel Is Dominant As Otters Advance With 8–2 Win

Daniel Harris goes eight strong, striking out nine, as Otters stay perfect at CCAA Tournament

STOCKTON, Calif. — Junior righty Daniel Harris (Saddleback College) gave a dominating performance to lead No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay to an 8–2 win over Stanislaus State at the 2019 CCAA Baseball Championship Tournament Thursday at Banner Island Ballpark.

The win lifts CSUMB to 33–19 overall and sets up a Friday winner's bracket meeting with Cal Poly Pomona (27–25). The winner of that game will advance to Saturday's championship game while the loser will face an elimination game Friday night.

This one featured two pitchers at the top of their games, with Harris fanning nine in eight innings and his counterpart, Stanislaus senior Tyler Murphy striking out nine in six. Harris, however, was able to pitch around the few hits he did allow while the Otter bats punished every mistake Murphy made.

Playing as the visiting team, the Otters scored twice in the first inning before Stanislaus pulled one back in the home half. Both pitchers settled in after that, with Murphy striking out the side in the second inning and Harris returning the favor in the fourth.

While Harris got stronger as the game progressed, Murphy began to falter. Left fielder Nick Sheehan (Fresno CC) doubled CSUMB's lead with a solo home run, his first of 2019, in the fourth inning.

Reed Oster (Napa HS) made it 4–1 Otters with an RBI triple in the sixth that helped chase Murphy. First baseman Brian Morley (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) put the game on ice with a 3–run homer, his team–leading ninth, in the eighth inning before Kyle Dean (Rancho Bernardo HS) rubbed salt in the wound with a no–doubt shot to left center in the ninth.

Eight different Otters collected hits Thursday night, led by TJ Dove (Yuba CC), who finished the game 2–for–5. Dean's home run extended his hitting streak to a team season–high 14 games.
