Otters Bounce Back, Sweep Saturday Twinbill From Broncos

Two big innings plus strong starts from Fabing, Steinbeck lead to 9–3 and 8–3 wins

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay bounced back from a subpar performance Friday night to earn a doubleheader sweep of Cal Poly Pomona Saturday afternoon, 9–3 and 8–3 at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (22–14, 20–10 CCAA) got a bit of everything Saturday, but it all began with a pair of strong starts from San Benito High School products Greg Steinbeck in the opener and Connor Fabing in the nightcap. Although Steinbeck didn't get the win—that honor went to Jeffery Ahern (Anderson HS), who improved to 3–0 with an inning of shutout relief—he pitched six strong, allowing just two runs on three hits.

In Game 2, Fabing did it all himself, throwing his first collegiate complete game. He allowed just four hits. He yielded only two hits over the final five innings, facing just one batter over the minimum in the process.

Offensively, the games came down to a pair of big innings. The Otters clawed their way to a 4–2 lead through seven innings in the opener then blew the game open with a 5–run eighth.

In the nightcap, Brian Morley's (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) solo shot with one out open a can of hurt that Pomona couldn't put a lid on until eight runs had crossed the plate.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kyle Czaplak's 2–run single put the Otters up 7–3 in the bottom of the eighth.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Brian Morley's seventh home run of the season opened the floodgates in the fourth inning. Although CSUMB didn't take the lead until Kyle Czaplak's 2–run double later in the inning, Morley was the first of six consecutive Otters to reach base in the decisive frame.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… CSUMB's doubleheader sweep was its second consecutive twin killing and its fifth of the season.

SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST… CSUMB's late inning offense continued to produce with five more runs in their final at bats of the opener. From the eighth inning on, the Otters are out–scoring their opponents 47–21 this season.

THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMING… Well, technically speaking, he didn't get a hit, but Junior right fielder Kyle Dean ran his streak of reaching base safely to a team season-high 28 games Saturday when he was hit by a pinch in each game. It's also worth noting that Kyle Czaplak ran his streak to 20 games with a three hits in the doubleheader. Czaplak's is the second-longest streak by an Otter in 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Connor Fabing (W [2–2], CG, 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 3 BB); Brian Morley (3x8, HR [7], R, 3 RBI); Kyle Czaplak (3x7, 2B, SF, SB, 3 R, 5 RBI); Kokko Figueiredo (3x5, 3B, 4 BB, 3 R, RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set versus Cal Poly Pomona with a single game against the Broncos starting Sunday at noon.
