Otters Open Series With Improbable Extra–Inning Win

Brian Morley’s walk–off double in the 10th makes CSUMB a 6–5 winner over Stanislaus

SEASIDE, Calif. — Facing one of the top pitchers in the West Region with its own No. 1 starter out this week, Cal State Monterey Bay found a way to take a thrilling 10–inning, 6–5 win in its series opener with Stanislaus State Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters chased Stanislaus ace Chase Wheatcroft after five innings, but the Warriors rallied from a 4–1 deficit to take a 6–5 lead in the 10th inning. The Otters rebounded for the win in the home half of the 10th when Brian Morley (Carmichael/Old Dominion Univ.) drove home Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS)/College of the Redwoods) and Kyle Dean (Rancho Bernardo HS/BYU) with a double to deep center for the walk–off winner.

With its own ace, Daniel Harris taking the week off, the Otters used four pitchers Friday, none of whom threw more than 3 1/3 innings. But Max Jones, Connor Fabing, DJ Martinez and Sean McClure held Stanislaus just enough for the Otter offense to find a way.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… After the Otters loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th on a hit batter, a Kyle Dean double and an intentional walk to Kyle Czaplak, Brian Morley doubled to deep center to drive home the tying and winning runs.

IT'S ALSO WORTH NOTING… Although the Otters still had to score twice in their half of the 10th to seal the win, Sean McClure struck out two batters with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the 10th to set up the fantastic finish.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Sean McClure allowed just one run in 3 1/3 innings of relief Friday to earn his first victory as an Otter.

THE 900 CLUB… The Otters will head into action Saturday with three players boasting an OPS of at least 900. Kyle Dean, who doubled and homered Friday, leads that trio with an OPS of .982. Kyle Czaplak is just behind Dean at .972. Brian Morley's game–winning double lifted his OPS to .936.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Kyle Dean (3x5, 2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI); Brian Morley (1x4, 2B, BB, 2 RBI); Kyle Czaplak (1x2, 2B, 3 BB, R, RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game set versus Stanislaus State with a doubleheader against the Warriors starting Saturday at 11 a.m.
