CARSON, Calif. -- What started off as a laugher turned into a thriller when Cal State Monterey Bay opened a 4-game series at Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday afternoon. Although Dominguez Hills made a game of it, the Otters ended with the last laugh in a 13-10 victory at Toro Field.
The Otters scored six runs in the first inning and led 10-1 after three complete. Things got dicey from there for Otter fans, however, as the Toros pulled to within a single run in the seventh inning.
In the end, the Otters pulled it out thanks to a season-high 18-hit attack.
Kokko Figueiredo (College of the Redwoods),
TJ Dove (Yuba CC) and
Nick Sheehan (Fresno CC) led the way with three hits apiece.
On the mound, junior
Michael Scolaro (L.A. Pierce College) allowed just one earned in 4 1/3 innings of relief to improve to 2-0.
Â
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Kyle Guerra's RBI single made it 13-10 Otters in the eighth inning.
Michael Scolaro retired the final nine Toros in a row to close out the win.
THE HIT PARADE… The Otters rapped a season-high 18 hits in Friday's 13-10 win at Dominguez Hills. They were the most hits by the Otters since they pounded Cal State East Bay pitching for 22 hits on May 4, 2018.
EVERYBODY MARCHES IN THE HIT PARADE… Not only did the Otters pound a season-high 18 hits Friday afternoon, every Otter that stepped to the plate collected at least one hit. Five of the 10 Otters that batted Friday enjoyed multi-hit games.
WHEN 22 IS BETTER THAN BLACKJACK… The number 22 might be bad in Las Vegas, but it's a good one for junior right fielder
Kyle Dean, who ran his streak of reaching base safely to a team season-high 22 games by going 1-for-4 with a pair of walks Friday. It's also worth noting that
Kyle Czaplak ran his streak to 14 games with two hits and two walks. Czaplak's is the second-longest streak by an Otter in 2019.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Nick Sheehan (3x5, R, 2 RBI);
TJ Dove (3x6, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI);
Kokko Figueiredo (3x6, R, RBI);
Kyle Czaplak (2x4, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI);
Mason Allen (2x5, 2B, R, RBI);
Connor Caspersen (1x3, 2B, @ R, RBI);
Michael Scolaro (W [2-0], 4.1 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 K).
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4-game series at Cal State Dominguez Hills with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
