Slow Starts Spells Trouble For Otters in 85–64 Loss To SFSU

Chris Turner scores 12 in his final home game; Joseph Bosetti posts his first Otter double–double

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay had trouble finding its rhythm early and never found a way out of its early troubles in an 85–64 loss to San Francisco State Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff HS) posted his first Otter double–double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Turner (San Jose/Pioneer HS), the lone senior on the CSUMB roster, added 12 points in his final collegiate home game.

CSUMB began the game 3–for–16 from the field with four turnovers, allowing the Gators to open a 24–12 lead midway through the first half. The deficit was 15 points by halftime, 46–31, and the Otters never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jiday Ugbaja grabbed the rebound of an Otter miss with 2:44 remaining and the Gators leading 80–63.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Joseph Bosetti became the second member of the Otter double–double club in 2018–19 by scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes off the bench Saturday versus San Francisco State. Jared Williams owns CSUMB's only other double–double this season with 10 points and 11 boards at Cal State L.A. on Feb. 9.

JAHVON UP TO NO. 11 IN CAREER SCORING… With 21 points scored this weekend, Jahvon Johnson has moved up to No. 11 on the Otter career scoring list with 853 points. He passed Augie Johnston (848) and Jay Demaestri (851) over the weekend. He needs 57 points to catch Ryan Nitz (909) for a spot in the Otter Top 10.

JAHVON NEARS 200… With eight assists on the weekend, Jahvon Johnson moved to within seven of passing 200 assists in his career. He is looking to join D'Shon Cannon (371), Brandon Ward (253) and Alex Fertig (236) as the only players in Otter history to reach 200 assists.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Joseph Bosetti 17; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti 10; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 5; BLOCKS: Koen Sapwell 1; STEALS: Jahvon Johnson/Charlie Tooley 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their final three games of the 2018–19 season, beginning at Cal State East Bay Saturday (Feb. 23) as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
