Johnson Breaks Free–Throw Record In Loss To CSUSB

Jahvon Johnson becomes CSUMB’s career free–throw leader in 84–69 setback

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior guard Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) became Cal State Monterey Bay's all–time leading free–throw shooter, but his record–breaking performance wasn't enough to stop Cal State San Bernardino from taking an 84–69 decision Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Johnson went 11–for–11 from the line as part of his team–high 25–point performance to give him 246 free throws for his career. He eclipsed the mark set by former All–American Davion Berry, who made 341 during his Otter career.

Johnson opened the game with a 3–pointer as part of a 10–3 jaunt for CSUMB out of the gate. Four minutes later, San Bernardino took the lead at 18–15 and never looked back.

The Coyotes led by as many as 23 points with 12 minutes remaining in the second half. CSUMB trimmed the deficit to nine point with five minutes to play but could get no closer.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN…a Jeremy Smith jumper gave San Bernardino an 82–67 lead with 1:48 to play.

JOHNSON DOES IT ALL… Jahvon Johnson did a little bit of everything Saturday versus San Bernardino. He not only led the team in scoring (25 points), he led the Otters in rebounds (5), assists (4), steals (2) and blocks (1).

PLAYED TO PERFECTION… Jahvon Johnson went a perfect 11–for–11 from the free–throw line Saturday versus San Bernardino. He is one of five Otters ever to go spotless from the line while taking at least 10 attempts and the only Otter to do it twice. He also went 10–for–10 from the line at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Dec. 1, 2018.

JOHNSON JUST MISSES HIS CAREER BEST… Jahvon Johnson just missed a career–best scoring performance by finishing with 25 points Saturday versus San Bernardino. His career–high game was 26 points in a 96–67 win over Alaska on Nov. 15..

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson 25; REBOUNDS: Jahvon Johnson/Maurice Woods 5; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 4; BLOCKS: Joseph Bosetti/Jahvon Johnson/Tommy Kramer 1; STEALS: Jahvon Johnson 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close the 2019 calendar year by hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills for a Winter Solstice doubleheader on Saturday (Dec. 21). The women will tip–off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip–off at 3 p.m.
