Late Flurry Can’t Overcome Early Own Goal At Pomona

Broncos can’t solve three Otter keepers, but they escape with 1–0 win

POMONA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team played well enough to earn at least a share of the spoils, but came away empty handed as No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona rode an early own goal to a 1–0 win Sunday at Kellogg Stadium.

Senior defender Alyson Schade (Brea–Olinda HS), who has been nothing short of amazing filling in in goaling for the injured Alyssa Noh, accidently knocked a high bouncing ball on the goal line into the net in the seventh minute. It proved to be the only score of the match.

Pomona put nine shots on frame, but never solved a trio of CSUMB keepers. In addition to Schade, sophomore striker Sierra Levy (Tulare Western HS) and senior midfielder Sahana Bojorquez (Las Vegas, Nev./Spring Valley HS) also spent time in goal.

It marked the first collegiate appearance in goal for both Levy and Bojorquez. Levy made one save. Schade and Bojorquez were credited with four saves apiece.

The Otters had several glorious chances to tie the game, but couldn't finish on this day. Their best flurry came with 10 minutes remaining when Levy headed from close range off the cross bar.

The resulting scramble earned the Otters a free kick at the top of the box, but Allexxis Hand (Hacienda Heights/Los altos HS) curled the resulting free kick just over the bar.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close the regular season with a pair of contests in the Central Valley, starting with a Thursday (Nov. 7) affair at Stanislaus State. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
