PIONEER 3–DOT NOTES (9–17, 5–15 CCAA): The Otters still have a chance to catch East Bay in the CCAA standings, but must win Saturday night to keep that hope afloat…East Bay had lost nine in a row before a 56–45 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night…Pioneers rank No. 2 in the CCAA in rebounding at +4.8 rebounds per game…Druce Asah (So./G) leads a balanced offense at 12.7 ppg…Kyle Frakes (Sr./C) is East Bay's top rebounder at 7.2 rpg…Juwan Anderson (Jr./G) ranks No. 2 in the CCAA in assists at 4.5 apg.
WHEN LAST WE MET: The first meeting with the Pioneers proved to be so a tough night for the Otters that even career nights from
Jahvon Johnson and
Mateo Jones couldn't prevent visiting Cal State East Bay from taking a 76–54 decision on Dec. 2. Johnson led all scorers with a (then) career–high 21 points. Jones, meanwhile recorded his second consecutive double–double, finishing with 11 points and a career–high 16 rebounds. Drew Bender led East Bay with 15 points.
WELCOME ABOARD ISAAC WILLIAMS: Isaac Williams comes to CSUMB after posting a 120–41 record in five seasons as head coach at Eastern Oregon University. He replaced Rob Bishop, who went 86–157 in nine seasons with the Otters. Williams led EOU to a 24–9 record and the second round of the NAIA Championship Tournament in 2016–17.
THE DEUCE NEEDS AN ACE: With two steals last week,
Mateo Jones Alex Fertig (2013–16) for the CSUMB career steals record at 108. Jones, who averages 1.83 steals per game, has two games remaining to claim the record for his own.
MORE FROM THE THIEF OF VICTORVILLE: Mateo Jones enters the week with 44 steals from the season, tie Rashaan Chavis (1999) for No. 7 on the Otter single season list. He needs two more to catch Josh Dean (2002) for No. 6, four more to match Antoine Griffin (2003) for No. 5 and six more to equal Khi Min Jung (2003) for No. 4.
ON THE BLOCKS: Gregg Polosky now has 27 so far in his junior season. That is good for No. 7 on the Otter single–season list. Billy Curry owns the CSUMB record of 40 set in 2000–01. Polosky already owns the CSUMB career record of 87.
THE NOT SO STEALTH BOMBERS: CSUMB continued its aerial assault on the record book by draining 16 more 3–pointers last week. That gives the Otters 236 for the season, good for No. 2 on the school single–season list.
The Otters need to average just five treys per game over the final two games to break the school record of 245 set by the 1999 squad. They're averaging 9.8 per game so far.
AMONG THE CCAA LEADERS: Mateo Jones enters the week ranked No. 3 the CCAA in rebounding (8.2 rpg) and No. 3 in steals (1.8 spg). Other Otters among the leaders include: BLOCKS:
Gregg Polosky (No. 5, 1.1 bpg); REBOUNDING:
Gregg Polosky (No. 5, 7.0 rpg); SCORING:
Jahvon Johnson (No. 15, 13.0 ppg); 3-pt FG pct. (min. 2.5/g):
Josh Kollman (No. 1, .452); 3-pt FG per game:
Josh Kollman (No. 1, 3.4/g).
A SHOOTER'S CHANCE: The Otters entering the week ranked No. 2 in the CCAA in both 3–point field goals (9.8 pg) and 3–point FG percentage (.369). The Otters trail Cal State L.A. in total 3–pointers made, 239 to 236, though L.A. has 23 more attempts
WE LOVE THE 80s: The 80s have usually been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters in recent history. Last weekend, however the Otters lost both games while scoring 80 or more points. It marks the first time since Dec. 30 2011–Jan. 5, 2012 that they scored 80+ in consecutive games and lost them both. Thursday's 86–80 loss to UCSD and Saturday's 84–81 loss to San Marcos dropped CSUMB mark to 41–7 (.854) in its last 48 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation dating to the 2007–08 season.
WORKING OVERTIME: CSUMB's OT win at UCSD on Dec. 8 was its third overtime game of the season. That matches its most overtime games since the Otters played a school–record four such contests in 2006–07.
GO OTTERS!
