Late Spurt Pushes Sunbirds Past Otters

Sophomore Koen Sapwell scores career–high 22 for CSUMB in 71–60 setback

SEASIDE, Calif. — A late Fresno Pacific run broke open a close game and lifted the visiting Sunbirds to a 71–60 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Wednesday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB got 22 points from sophomore Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, South Aust.) and career highs of 10 rebounds from freshman Kyle Johnson (Point Loma HS) and nine rebounds from junior guard Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS), but it wasn't quite enough in the final Otter game before the Christmas break.

The Otters took their final lead of the night at 46–45 on a Sapwell 3–pointer midway through the second half. It was a 1–point game with less than eight minutes remaining when Fresno used a 14–2 run to pull away at 66–53.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Elijah Hill made a pair of free throws with 1:55 remaining to give Fresno its biggest lead at 71–56.

ON THE REBOUND… Led by career–high nights from Kyle Johnson (10) and Jahvon Johnson (9), the undersized Otters out–rebounded an opponent for the fifth time this season. Their 41 total rebounds were their second most this season (47 vs. Concordia–Portland on Nov. 10).

THE 20–POINT CLUB… Koen Sapwell became the fourth member of CSUMB's 20–point Club this season by matching his career–high with 22 points Wednesday night. It was Sapwell's third career 20–point game as an Otter.

HONOR AMONGST THIEVES… Led by a career–high three steals from Jahvon Johnson, the Otters matched their team season high with eight steals Wednesday versus Fresno Pacific.

JAHVON LENDS A HAND… Jahvon Johnson passed a pair of assists Wednesday night, giving him 153 helpers in his career. That ties Richard Jenkins for No. 8 on the CSUMB career steals list. Next up is Steve Monreal with 155.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Koen Sapwell 22; REBOUNDS: Kyle Johnson 10; ASSISTS: Charlie Tooley 5; BLOCKS: Kyle Johnson 2; STEALS: Jahvon Johnson 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will ring out 2018 by hosting Cal State East Bay for a CCAA doubleheader on Sunday, Dec. 30 in The Kelp Bed. The women will tipoff at 1 p.m. and the men will tipoff at 3 p.m.
