Last–Second Bucket Lifts Toros Over Otters, 86–84

Jahvon Johnson leads all scorers with 23, but Dominguez Hills scores with 1.7 ticks remaining to win

SEASIDE, Calif. — The first win of the season slipped agonizingly away from Cal State Monterey Bay when Isaiah Morris banked home a short runner with 1.7 seconds remaining to give visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills an 86–84 win Saturday evening in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters had tied the game just six seconds earlier on a Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) 3–pointer. Following a CSUDH timeout, Morris raced down court and made the contested shot over a pair of Otter defenders. The Otters had a desperation chance at the win, but it didn't come close.

CSUMB led for more than half of the contest and built the biggest lead for either team at 10 points midway through the first half. But the game stayed within two possessions for either side for most of the final 24 minutes.

CSUMB took its final lead at 79–78 on a Jared Williams (Eastvale/Roosevelt HS) layup off a pretty Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, South Australia) feed inside the 4–minute mark.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a desperation attempt by Akil Reese from beyond half court couldn't find its way home as time expired.

JOHNSON JOINS THE CLUB… By scoring a game–high 23 points Saturday, Jahvon Johnson became the third Otter to score 20 points in a game this season. He joins Charlie Tooley — who poured in 24 at San Francisco State — and Joseph Bosetti — who went for 22 Thursday night against UC San Diego — in the 20–point club.

A PERFECT (FOR 10)… Jahvon Johnson joined another elite club Saturday by going a perfect 10–for–10 from the free–throw line against Dominguez Hills. He became just the sixth player in Otter history to enjoy a perfect game from the line while making at least 10 free throws. He is the first Otter to accomplish the feat since Davion Berry set the CSUMB record by going 14–for–14 from the line against Sonoma State on Feb. 18, 2011.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson 23; REBOUNDS: Jared Williams 7; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 3; BLOCKS: Jared Williams 2; STEALS: Akil Reese/Charlie Tooley 1.

THE LAST WORD… "That was an especially tough loss in a season that has already had way too many tough losses. We will have to put all that behind us and keep striving for improvement." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head up the coast for a doubleheader at Humboldt State Thursday (Dec. 6) in as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
