WILDCAT 3–DOT NOTES (14–5, 11–4 CCAA): The Wildcats are the defending West Region champions…dropped both ends of their San Diego trip to open 2018 but have won all five games since then…coming off a sweep of Dominguez Hills (82–64) and Cal State L.A. (85–58) last weekend…rank No. 2 in the CCAA in scoring defense (63.4 ppg)…also rank No. 2 in scoring margin (+9.2 ppg)…Corey Silverstrom (Sr./G) leads the Wildcats and ranks No. 8 in the CCAA scoring race at 14.6 ppg…Jalen McFerren (Sr./G) adds 13.3 ppg and a team–best 6.3 rpg.
LUMBERJACK 3–DOT NOTES (6–15, 3–12 CCAA): One has to go way back in history to find such a slow start to the season for the Lumberjacks…only three of their six wins have come against NCAA Division II competition…both CCAA wins came during New Year's week against Cal State L.A. (69–64) and—impressively—at Cal State San Marcos (81–78)…Tyras Rattler (Jr./G) leads the team in scoring at 13.4 ppg…Davasyia Hagger (Sr./F) adds 11.0 ppg and 6.6 rpg.
WHEN LAST WE MET CHICO: CSUMB dressed just eight players and got double–doubles from both
Julien Ducree (12 pts/10 reb) and
Matt Bejsovec (11 pts, 10 reb), but it wasn't enough to stop Chico from rolling to an 88–59 win in Acker Gym last season. Robert Duncan and Isaiah Ellis led four Wildcats in double figures with 15 points apiece.
WHEN LAST WE MET HUMBOLDT: A 3–pointer with 13 seconds remaining by HSU's Jalen Terry forced overtime, but the Otters dominated the extra period to take an 87–71 decision in The Kelp Bed on Nov. 30.
Mateo Jones (19 pts/13 reb) and
Gregg Polosky (13 pts/15 rebounds) both collected double–doubles for the Otters. Davasyia Hagger (12 pts/11 reb) had one for the Jacks.
WELCOME ABOARD ISAAC WILLIAMS: Isaac Williams comes to CSUMB after posting a 120–41 record in five seasons as head coach at Eastern Oregon University. He replaced Rob Bishop, who went 86–157 in nine seasons with the Otters. Williams led EOU to a 24–9 record and the second round of the NAIA Championship Tournament in 2016–17.
A SIX PACK FROM THE RECORD… With three steals Saturday night,
Mateo Jones moved to within six of breaking the school record of 108 set by
Alex Fertig (2013–16). Jones, who averages 1.9 steals per game, has six games left to break the record.
MORE FROM THE THIEF OF VICTORVILLE… Mateo Jones finished the night with 39 steals from the season, good for No. 11 on the Otter single season list. He needs one more to catch Jay DeMaestri (40 in 2005–06) for the No. 10 spot.
ON THE BLOCKS… With two more blocks Saturday night,
Gregg Polosky now has 26 so far in his junior season. That ties
Kris Gallop for No. 7 on the Otter single–season list. Billy Curry owns the CSUMB record of 40 set in 2000–01. Polosky already owns the CSUMB career record of 86.
BOMBS AWAY (CONTINUED)… With seven more 3–pointers Saturday night versus Cal Poly Pomona, the Otters now have 195 on the season, good for sole possession of the No. 4 spot in the CSUMB record book. Next up is the 2015–16 team that made 204 treys. The all–time record is held by the 1998–99 squad that made 245 in 31 games.
AMONG THE CCAA LEADERS: Mateo Jones enters the week ranked No. 2 the CCAA in rebounding (8.8 rpg) and No. 3 in steals (1.9 spg). Other Otters among the leaders include: BLOCKS:
Gregg Polosky (No. 5, 1.1 bpg); REBOUNDING:
Gregg Polosky (No. 8, 6.6 rpg); SCORING:
Jahvon Johnson (No. 15, 13.2 ppg); 3-pt FG pct.:
Josh Kollman (No. 3, .456); 3-pt FG per game:
Josh Kollman (No. 1, 3.3/g),
Koen Sapwell (No. 10, 2.1/g).
WE LOVE THE 80s: The 80s have usually been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters in recent history. Last weekend, however the Otters lost both games while scoring 80 or more points. It marks the first time since Dec. 30 2011–Jan. 5, 2012 that they scored 80+ in consecutive games and lost them both. Thursday's 86–80 loss to UCSD and Saturday's 84–81 loss to San Marcos dropped CSUMB mark to 41–7 (.854) in its last 48 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation dating to the 2007–08 season.
WORKING OVERTIME: CSUMB's OT win at UCSD on Dec. 8 was its third overtime game of the season. That matches its most overtime games since the Otters played a school–record four such contests in 2006–07.
GO OTTERS!
