Sloppy First Half Proves Costly In 78–70 Loss To San Bernardino

Brian Garrett leads four Otters in double figures with 15 points; Gregg Polosky posts third double-double

SEASIDE, Calif. — A well–played second half wasn't enough to overcome 15 first–half turnovers as Cal State Monterey Bay fell to visiting Cal State San Bernardino 78–70 Friday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB turned the ball over a season–high 22 times, including 15 in a first half that saw it fall behind 38–29 at the break. The Otters righted the ship in the final 20 minutes, shooting 52 percent from the floor (17-for-33) while committing just five turnovers.
The improved play allowed the Otters to keep San Bernardino within striking distance down the stretch. Although they had several opportunities to tie, however, they never got closer than two points in the final 10 minutes.

Brian Garrett (San Carlos/St. Francis HS) made the first start of his collegiate career and led four Otters in double figures with 15 points. Gregg Polosky (San Ramon Valley HS) posted his third double–double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Ajon Efferson knocked down a pair of free throws with 30 seconds remaining to give San Bernardino a 76–67 lead.

JONES JOINS THE CENTURY CLUB… Mateo Jones added one steal to his ledger Friday night to join Alex Fertig (2013–16) as the only players in Otter history with 100 or more career steals. Jones (100 steals) has seven games remaining to try to top Fertig's MB record of 108 steals.

ANOTHER DOUBLE–DOUBLE… Gregg Polosky's 12–point, 11–rebound double–double Friday night was his third of the season and the ninth by an Otter in 2017–18. That's the most double–doubles by an Otter team since the 2008–09 squad totaled 13 (10 of those by Joe Mitchell).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Brian Garrett 15; REBOUNDS: Gregg Polosky 11; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson/Koen Sapwell 3; BLOCKS: Gregg Polosky 3; STEALS: Mateo Jones/Gregg Polosky/Koen Sapwell 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters close their brief 2–game homestand by host No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
