CHICO, Calif. -- It took eight and one–third innings,, but after back and forth scoring throughout the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team fell to Chico State in a heartbreaking walkoff loss. The Wildcats loaded the bases and capitalized on a walk to close the gap to one run. Tyler Madrid ended it with one swing of the bat, driving in two runs on a single to the opposite field to give the hosts an 8–7 win.
The Otters took the initial 3–0 lead in the third inning, highlighted by a two–RBI single by
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS). Brian Hamm (Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley HS) also contributed an RBI in the third inning after not playing in a game since February 6th. Freshman pitcher
Greg Steinbeck (Hollister, Calif. / San Benito High School) surrendered a run to Chico in the third, followed by three more in the fourth, allowing the Wildcats to stake a 4–3 lead. Steinbeck was faced with his second no decision in a row after beginning the season 6–0.
CSUMB tied the contest at five runs apiece in the fifth inning off of two sacrifice fly balls that scored Davidson and
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS).There was a lull in offensive production for both team, until CSUMB broke the tie in the eighth inning on a
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif. / North Monterey County HS) RBI triple (2) and a
Curtis Gomez (Watsonville, Calif. / St. Francis HS) RBI single, giving the visitors in gold and blue a 7–5 lead.
However, the back end of the Otter bullpen allowed the Wildcats to comeback and complete the walkoff win, 8–7. Cox (4–1) was faced with his first loss of the season after allowing three runs on two hits over four innings.
Hamm recorded two RBIs in his return along with Davidson's two RBI's to lead the Otter offense. Morris contributed three hits in the leadoff spot, while three other players tallied two hits in the loss. For Chico, Cameron Santos knocked in two RBI's in addition to Madrid's two game–winning RBI's.
CSUMB falls to 18–11, 14–7 CCAA and will continue the 4–game series at Chico State on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon.
