SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The Otters hit the road for the first time this season to play four games against Cal State San Bernardino. The Otters picked up where they left off last weekend, beating the host Coyotes 10-5 in game one of Friday's doubleheader. CSUMB made it to double–digit runs once again in game two, plating 12 runs on their way to a 12–2 win making it eight straight wins and six in a row to start the conference season.
GAME 1 | CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 10, CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO 5The Otters kicked things off scoring twice in the third inning to take an early 2–1 lead in the afternoon game at Fiscalini Field. After each team added one run in the fifth inning, CSUMB took a 3–2 lead into the sixth.
Myles Hager (Tarzana, Calif / Chaminade College Prep) started the sixth inning with a single which was promptly followed by an RBI double by
Shawn Wheeler (Citrus Heights, Calif. / Bella Vista HS) effectively flipping the switch on the Otter offense. CSUMB scored five more times in the sixth inning, highlighted by a three–run homerun by
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) giving him 18 RBIs and four big fly's on the season.
With a 9–2 lead,
Greg Steinbeck (Hollister, Calif. / San Benito High School) finished his outing with a 1–2–3 bottom of the sixth, earning his fourth win (4–0) in as many appearances.
Christian Stubbs (Mission Viejo, Calif. / San Joan Hills HS) came in on relief and secured the win for Steinbeck and the Otters, allowing three runs (none earned) over three innings of work. CSUMB picked up one run in the top of the ninth inning to come away with the 10–5 victory over the Coyotes.
In addition to Davidson's big game at the plate, five other Otters had at least two hits including a 3–for–4, 2 R game by Hager.
Chris Blanton (Burlingame HS) also chipped in two RBI's in the win. For CSUSB, four Coyotes tallied two hits.
GAME 2 | CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 13, CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO 2Cal State Monterey Bay got off to a hot start pushing across four runs in the first frame, three via the long ball from
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS) who hit his second homerun of the season and gave the Otters a 4–0 lead. CSUMB didn't stop there, plating two more in the second inning to take a 6–1 lead. More offense came later in three consecutive innings as the Otters scored once in the fifth and sixth innings before plating two in the seventh to give them a 10–1 lead.
Cal State San Bernardino had a chance for a big inning in the seventh, however, reliever
Brian Scott (Campbell, Calif. / Westmont HS) came in with runners on second and third with two outs to get the hold and limit the damage to one Coyote run. The Otters made it an eleven–run lead in the ninth on two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly by
A.C. Nuñez (Corona, Calif. / Roosevelt HS), putting the final score at 13–2.
CSUMB starting pitcher
Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS) recorded his second win of the season (2–1) after throwing six and two–thirds innings of two run ball. In addition to allowing two runs, Owen gave up four hits and struck out nine batters.
Flores ended the game with four RBIs while Davidson pitched in two RBIs and a run scored.
Brian Bostjancic (Forest Knolls, Calif. / Sir Francis Drake HS), played his part, going 5–for–6 with two RBIs and two runs scored. For CSUSB, four different Coyotes recorded one hit in the loss.
The Otters improve to 10–4, 6–0 CCAA, while the Coyotes fall to 3–12, 1–5 CCAA after the doubleheader sweep. Cal State Monterey Bay will be back in action to wrap up the series with a doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino, Saturday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
