Otters Split Opening Day Doubleheader To WOU

CSUMB shuts out Western Oregon 15-0 before falling 4-3 in nightcap

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 14 Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team's offense exploded to cruise to a 15-0 win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Western Oregon before falling short, 4-3, in nightcap.
 
Junior Noah Graham (Aliso Viejo/Saddleback JC) went 4-for-4 with two doubles on the day while senior Mark Hurley (Hollister/College of San Mateo) recorded three hits.  Junior Brian Hamm (Pleasanton/Chabot College) was lethal on the base paths, racking up two stolen bases.
 
The Otters continue their four-game series against the Wolves on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m.

GAME 1: CSUMB 15, WOU 0  
CSUMB scored five runs in the first two innings and cruised to the win behind 15 runs off eight hits while taking advantage of WOU's three errors. The Wolves finished with seven hits and stranded 11 runners.
 
The four-run first inning consisted of two WOU errors and two sacrifice flies while being highlighted Ty Morris' (Royal Oaks/North Monterey County HS) double through the left side.
 
The Otters extended their lead with another four-run inning that included a bases clearing double by Hurley.
 
Junior Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS) (1-0) earned the win after striking out five and giving up only three hits through four innings. Senior Josh Eagle (Antioch/Sierra College) struck out five in three innings of work and classmate A.J. Quintero (Vacaville/Sacramento City College) closed the game with four strikeouts in the final two innings.
 
WOU's Spenser Watkins (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs with only one earned in his five innings of action.

GAME 2: WOU 4, CSUMB 3
With their rally caps on in the final three innings, the Otters fell one run short after leaving four runners on bases.
 
The Wolves scored their first run of 2014 on Marcus Madden's single after Daniel McNabb reached first on an error.
 
WOU put up three more runs in the top of the sixth on three consecutive hits after a leadoff walk.
 
CSUMB finally got on the board in its half of the sixth.  The first three of four Otters drew walks with a Graham single in between.  Morris hit a sacrifice fly to plate Graham and senior Michael Lonsdale (Castro Valley/Chabot College) hit a Texas Leaguer to right to plate freshman Josh Heinz (Santa Clarita/West Ranch HS).
 
Junior Kory Groves (Citrus Heights/Sacramento City College) (0-1) was credited with the loss despite only giving up two hits and an unearned run in his four innings on the mound.  WOU's Matt Minnch earned the win after four shutout innings and Kody Stone was rewarded the save after closing out the game.
