BOX SCORE HAYWARD, Calif. – Junior David Garcia (Gilroy, Calif./Mission College) drove in two runs and senior Aaron Appino (Rancho Cordova, Calif./Sacramento City College) pitched into the eighth as Cal State Monterey Bay (16-15, 9-12 CCAA) won the series opener at Cal State East Bay (9-18, 3-14 CCAA) 4-1 Friday.
 
Garcia went 3-for-3 with a walk while Appino tossed 7 2/3 innings, giving up no runs on 10 hits. Closer Harold Zosel (Pleasanton, Calif./San Jose CC) earned his seventh save after getting out of trouble with a 643 double play and a groundout to second in the ninth.
 
After leading off the game with a single, senior Danny Nelson (Morgan Hill, Calif./San Jose CC) scored on junior Brian Haggett's (Hollister, Calif./Sacramento State) double to right center.  Garcia followed it up with a single down the left line to plate Haggett and put CSUMB in the lead 2-0.
 
An RBI single by Garcia in the third inning made it 3-0.  The Otters drew another run in the fourth on Tommy George's (Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove HS) single that brought freshman Ty Morris (Royal Oaks, Calif./North Monterey County HS) across the plate after he leadoff the inning with a double.
 
CSUEB's lone run came in the ninth on Kyle Zozaya's RBI single. He led the Pioneers with two hits that included a double.
 
The series will be continued on Saturday, Mar. 31 with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. in Seaside, Calif.
