Otters Fall To Walk Off In Conference Opener

| By:
BOX SCORE POMONA, Calif.  – After tying the CCAA series opener in the eighth, it looked like the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team was going to extra innings for the second time this season. Yet, the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos walked away with the 3-2 win after a two-out double by Chris Miller.

Tommy George (Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove) led the CSUMB offense with two hits while Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./Sacramento State) went 1-for-2 with two walks, a run and a RBI.

The Otters took a 1-0 lead in the second on Jared DeCastro's (Torrance, Calif./L.A. Harbor College) double, scoring Haggett who led off the inning on a walk.

Jenzen Torres would drive in runs in the third and seventh innings to put Pomona up 2-1, but CSUMB would answer with a run in the eighth.

Haggett hit a two-out single to right field to drive in Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif./Branham HS) from second.

After retiring the first two batters to start the ninth, freshman Chris Neifert (Scappoose, Ore./Scappoose HS) saw the inning slip away from him as CPP's Torres singled and Jordan Whiteman drew a walk to set up Miller's walk-off double.

Donny Medlinger (San Jose, Calif./Cal Poly SLO) (2-0) had strong performance, going six innings to finish with five strikeouts while allowing only one run. Neifert (1-2) picked up the loss in relief after giving up two runs in 2.2 innings.

The Broncos were led by Torres who finished with three key singles in the game.  Kyle McNutt earned his second win after coming into the game in relief.

The Otters (6-4, 0-1 CCAA) and Broncos (8-0, 1-0 CCAA) will continue their four-game series on Saturday, Feb. 18 with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
