BOX SCORE

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team played reasonably well Friday night, but reasonably well wasn't good enough against the soon to be crowned CCAA champions as No. 23 Cal State San Bernardino earned a 25–19, 26–24, 25–20 win over the Otters Friday night in The Kelp Bed.

Sophomore outside hitter Julia Ashen (Salinas/North Salinas HS) became just the second player in Otter history to surpass the 400–kill mark in a season, collecting a team–leading 11 Friday night to give her 410. She added 13 digs for her 15th double–double of the season.

Sophomore setter Kelsey Johnston (Ripon HS) approached a milestone of her own. She dished 16 assists to increase her school record total for 2012 to 996. She needs four more to crack the 1,000–assist barrier.

CSUMB hung tough in all three sets, with late Coyote runs proving the difference in each frame. The Otters trailed just 16–13 in the first set before a 7–0 San Bernardino run put that one on ice. The Otters appeared to be in control of the second set at 22–18 when a 6–1 Coyote burst turned the tide.
An Ashen kill gave CSUMB its final lead of the night at 12–11 in the third before six consecutive Coyotes points provided San Bernardino the cushion it needed to close out the match.

CSUMB returns to action for its 2012 season finale Saturday when it hosts UC San Diego in The Kelp Bed for a 7 p.m. first serve. The Otters will honor seniors Lauren Ding (Palo Alto/Gunn HS) and Rachel Freeno (Rancho Cucamonga/Alta Loma HS) in pregame ceremonies.
