HAYWARD, Calif. – On the road, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team took on Cal State East Bay, with a 18-10 win in the opener before dropping the nightcap, 15-6.
Freshman second baseman #Nolan Murray# had a productive day at the plate for the Otters. He went 6-for-11 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and three runs batted in.
The Otters will return to Seaside for a single game, Friday, April 9, for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) home-stand as they take on the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills starting at 3 p.m.
GAME 1

CSUMB jumped on the board in the first, capitalizing on a Pioneer error.
East Bay answered back, drawing a walk then a RBI double to right field.
The Otters racked up seven runs in the top of the second. Senior #Joey Friedman# singled to center field. Friedman logged his second stolen base of the season. With freshman #Thomas George# singling up the middle, Friedman advanced to third. Junior #Andrew DeGarmo# had a RBI single and advanced George. Murray hit his first collegiate home run over the left center wall bringing in DeGarmo. The Otter rally continued when freshman #Ronnie Fhurong# was hit by a pitch. After a Pioneer pitching change, Flores battled for the walk. Sophomore #Jordan Porcella-Smeds# was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Friedman approached the plate for the second time of the inning, he was hit by a pitch, bringing in another Otter run. Freshman #Kyle Espinola# hit a full-count single to center field bringing in both Porcella-Smeds and Flores.
Fhurong and Flores, both had hit in the third to bring in two CSUMB runs.
The Otters stayed hot in the fourth, scoring two runs, combining one hit and two Pioneer errors.
The Otters would give up a two-run home run to the Pioneers as they would add three runs in the fifth.
CSUMB capitalized when East Bay committed four errors in the seventh inning. The Otters had four hits and scored six.
East Bay would score one run in the ninth making the final score 18-10.
Flores went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and one run scored. Freshman pitcher #Corey Lathram# recorded his first win as an Otter.
The Otters recorded sixteen hits for the win.
GAME 2

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second. The Pioneers posted two runs.
East Bay would stay on top when they added three runs and stringing together four hits.
The Otters would get a break in the top of the fourth when George reached first base on an error by the shortstop. He would advance to second on a wild pitch. Senior #Brent Sargenti# drew four straight balls for the walk. With the fielder's choice to third, Sargenti and Espinola occupied first and second. Freshman #Alex Mangubat# singled to left field bringing Sargenti across the plate.
In the next three innings, the Pioneers continued their strike by scoring nine runs.
The Otter kept the bats alive, but it was not enough to catch-up to the Pioneers.
The Otters were out hit 21-13 in the series closer.
