2010 Senior Baseball Day

CSUMB Splits, Earns Big 17-4 Win At Home

Nine seniors were honored at Saturday's game

SEASIDE, Calif. – Playing on Otter turf for the last time this season, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team got their first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win at home this year, as they topped San Francisco State in the opener, 17-4, before dropping the nightcap, 6-3.

Between games the CSUMB coaching staff took time to honor the seniors on both teams. The Otters will graduate nine players: Infielders: #Joey Friedman#, #Ryan Chagonjian#, #Jacob Flores#; Outfielders: #Brent Sargenti#, #Jason Okamoto#, #Jerrod Krick#; and Pitchers: #Patrick McClain#, #Justin Aguilera#, and #Truett Hardin#.

McClain pitched the complete first game, topping the previous CSUMB record he held of 10 strike outs in a game with his new record of 12. He pitched six scoreless innings to get the win. On the day, freshman #Thomas George# went 5-for-9 with two runs batted in and three runs scored. Flores had four hits on the day.

CSUMB travels back to Maloney field, Sunday to conclude the CCAA series starting at 12 p.m.

GAME 1

The Gators jumped on top in the first with one run.

CSUMB's first hit of the game came in the third, off the bat of junior #Andrew DeGarmo#.

In the fourth inning, McClain struck out the side.

In the fifth inning, the Otters had an outstanding play in right field when George made a running catch towards the fence.

The Otter offence came alive in the fifth, scoring four runs. Friedman hit a double to left center to start off the rally for CSUMB. Sophomore #Jordan Porcella-Smeds# hit his fourth home run of the year over the left field wall. The hitting was contagious as DeGarmo followed with a single up the middle.  Chagonjian hit a RBI single to left field to continue the drive. The Otters tied it up, off the bat of freshman #Nolan Murray# on a fly-out to the right side when DeGarmo tagged up on third and was in safe under the play. Freshman #Ronnie Fhurong# hit a RBI double to score Chagonjian, but was thrown out at third by the relay from center.

In the top of the sixth, the Gators took advantage of a CSUMB wild pitch and an error, scoring one run.

The bottom of the inning promised to be as good as the fifth. George started it off with a single through the right side. Sargenti followed with a single of his own through the left side. The rally continued when Friedman hit his own single to center field, bringing in George.  Porcella-Smeds hit a full-count pitch RBI double to center. The Otters forced a Gator pitching change and CSUMB kept the no-out rally going. Right off the change, DeGarmo drew the walk to load the bases.  A run was forced across by when Chagonjian was hit-by-a-pitch. Murray followed with a single to bring in yet another Otter run. Flores had a RBI single through the left side to bring in Chagonjian. George and Sargenti had back-to-back singles, forcing another pitching change for SF State. The Otters batted around twice throughout the course of the inning, scoring 11 runs, bringing the run total to 15.

For the third consecutive inning, the Otters posted runs on the board. In the seventh, Fhurong and Flores both hit singles up the middle to put runners on first and second. George smashed a double to center bringing in both runners, making the final score 17-4.

Seven starters had a multi-hit game for the Otters. Porcella-Smeds was clutch for the Otters going 2-for-3 with a home run, one double, four runs batted in while scoring two runs. DeGarmo went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. George had four hits.

GAME 2

SF State got on the board in the top of the second when junior Nick Bowerman hit a two-run shot over the centerfield wall to put the Gators up 2-0.

George and Sargenti hit back-to-back triples in the second, both scored. The Otters had four hits in the inning.

SF State added one run in the fifth to put the Gators on top.

The Gators would add runs in the fifth and seventh inning to make the final score, 6-2.

The Otters finished the second game with eight hits.

Okamoto went 2-for-3 with a double, as Flores went 2-for-4 in their final home outing on Otter turf. Aguilera pitched six and one thirds inning in the nightcap.
