CSUMB Wins Final Game Against Sonoma State, 14-13

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team ended its four-game conference series against Sonoma State victoriously with a 14-13 win at Seawolf Diamond on Sunday afternoon.

Junior right handed pitcher #Scott Tully# got the win for the Otters, pitching five complete innings, giving up two hits while striking out eight. Senior first baseman #Ryan Chagonjian# went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one walk and four runs scored. Senior center fielder #Jason Okamoto# hit CSUMB's second grand slam of the season and went 3-for-5 at the plate. Freshman #Thomas George# went 2-for-4, scoring three runs while batting in three runs for the Otters.

CSUMB jumped on the board in the second, with a lead-off double by Chagonjian. Senior #Joey Friedman# battled for the walk. Freshman designated hitter #Kyle Espinola# singled to the right side to bring in the first run of the day, advancing Friedman to third. George reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Friedman from third. 

Sonoma was able to push one run across in the bottom of the third, but left two runners stranded.

The Otters answered back in the fourth starting with Chagonjian's second lead-off double of the game. With the execution of a perfect sacrifice bunt, Chagonjian advanced to third, which allowed him to score on a Seawolf wild pitch.  George walked, which brought in a new pitcher for the Seawolves. Okamoto singled to left center, scoring Espinola, advancing George to third. Okamoto advanced to second on an interference call and George scored making the score 5-1.

In the sixth, CSUMB added another run to the tally. George reached base on a fielding error by the first baseman. Okamoto and Murray hit back-to-back singles to bring in George.

The Otters had a big seventh inning with Chagonjian start things off with a walk. Friedman battled through a 12 pitch at-bat before finally drawing the walk. George singled to third base loading the bases. Okamoto hit a grand slam to left center to raise the CSUMB lead to 10-1.

Sonoma scored two runs in the seventh combining two hits and two walks.

CSUMB added another four runs in the eighth inning. Freshman shortstop #Ronnie Fhurong# watched four straight balls across the plate. Senior #Jacob Flores# reached on the error by the third baseman. Chagonjian singled to left field, advancing the runners and scoring Fhurong. Friedman drew a walk. Freshman #Alex Mangubat# grounded out to first base, scoring Flores. George singled to second base bringing both runners making the score 14-3.

The Seawolves scored four runs on two doubles and two walks.

Sonoma put up a fight to win the game in the ninth, scoring six runs, before freshman #Sean Barber# shut down the Seawolves shortstop who hit the home run to start off the inning.

CSUMB (6-23, 2-18 CCAA) travels to Turlock to start the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series with Cal State Stanislaus. The first pitch is scheduled  at 3 p.m.
