WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
OPENING TIP: The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team is slated to travel to Arcata for the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) tournament. The Otters will play Humboldt State on Tuesday, March 2 at Lumberjack Arena at 5:30 p.m. CSUMB finished tied for fourth in the CCAA standings but lost the tiebreaker with the Lumberjacks and will be the No. 5 seed in the tournament.
LAST MEETING: The Otters pulled out a 73-59 victory over the Lumberjacks on Feb. 6 in Arcata. Junior
LaShawn Johnson scored a career-high 23 points, 16 in the second half to lead the Otters. Junior #Julie Heurung#
nabbed her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
HISTORICAL SEASON: This will be the program's first post-season appearance since CSUMB became a full member of the CCAA in 2006-07. The Otters have accomplished numerous program achievements including best regular season overall record (18-8) and best conference record (14-8).
CCAA STAT RANKINGS: Against conference opponents, the Otters are first in 3-point field goals average (6.8). Senior #Veronica Williams#

THE LUMBERJACKS: Humboldt State (16-10, 14-8 CCAA) ended its 2009-10 regular season on a four-game losing steak including losses to two teams that finished in the bottom of the CCAA standings. Players to Watch: Brittney Taylor (18.0 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 52.4 fg pct); Andrea Bobic (12.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg); Paige Peterson (9.7 ppg, 83 assists).

UPCOMING GAMES: CSUMB competes in its final multi-day tournament this weekend, traveling to Cal Lutheran University for the Spring Classic on March 5-7.
COACH FIGUEROA'S CORNER: “The scoreboard may not be showing it yet, but we continue to improve. Attitudes are good and we want to learn. The scoreboard will show that soon enough.
Alyssa Pecora continues to help us at both ends of the court and kept her player of the week honors from last week. Everyone is giving a great effort.”
PREVIOUS WEEKEND: The Otters fell to the Tigers of UOP, 15-7, and the Lancers of Cal Baptist, 14-5, at the Santa Clara Invitational. Junior #Chloe McRae#

UPCOMING GAMES: The Otters return home for a week of non-conference games, kicking off with University of Montana State-Billings on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
PREVIOUS WEEKEND: The Otters were swept by No. 3 UC San Diego this past weekend in La Jolla. Senior #Jacob Flores#
went 6-for-15 in the four games for a .400 batting average with his third home run of the season.
THE YELLOWJACKETS: Montana State-Billings (0-6) is in search of their first victory of the season. With a doubleheader on Monday, Mar. 1 before heading to CSUMB, the Yellowjackets might pull one off before facing the Otters. Players to Watch: Ty Sobieraj (.412 BA, 7 H, 1 R).
THE URBAN KNIGHTS: Academy of Art (0-7) is looking for its first victory since the program began last year. Players to Watch: Chris Varga (.304 BA, 7 H, 1 2B, 3 RBI).
SOFTBALL
UPCOMING GAMES: CSUMB returns to CCAA play this weekend, welcoming Cal State San Bernardino to the Otter Softball Field. Friday's doubleheader begins 1 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
COACH KENNEY'S CORNER: I always enjoy playing CSUSB. Historically the games have been very close and I anticipate the same this weekend. This is a well coach team and I am looking forward to the challenge.”
PREVIOUS WEEKEND: The Otters split a non-conference doubleheader with Academy of Art on Thursday, Feb. 25. CSUMB dropped the first game, 1-0, despite another outstanding performance from junior
Diane Ortiz who gave up only two hits in seven innings and struck out 10 batters. The Otters rallied back and defeated the Urban Knights, 3-2, in the nightcap. Junior
Shae Olds hit a walk-off single to end the eight inning game.
CCAA STAT RANKINGS: The Otters are in the top 5 in all the conference batting categories, second in triples (2) and slugging percentage (.488) while third in runs scored (66). #Shae Olds#

NCAA RANKINGS: In the NFCA pre-season poll, CSUMB is ranked 30th in the nation (found in the receiving votes section). This is the first time a sport besides golf has appeared in the national polls.
CCAA PRESEASON POLL: CSUMB has been tabbed to repeat as the CCAA tournament champions following a vote of league coaches. The Otters are picked to finish second in the regular season behind Humboldt State.
THE COYOTES: Cal State San Bernardino (6-9, 5-3 CCAA) split a four-game series with Cal State East Bay in Hayward this past weekend. Players to Watch: Priscilla Curiel (.415 BA, 17 H, 4 2B, 6 R); Jaquel Holtzclaw (.375 BA, 18 H, 10 R, 10 RBI, 4 2B, 6 SB).
