CARSON, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's volleyball team captured its second California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory of the season on Saturday night, sweeping the Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hills in three sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-18).
CSUMB improves to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play, while the Toros fall to 1-13 (1-6 CCAA).
Senior #Alisha Thomas# had a season high .440 clip with 12 kills on 25 attempts and one error. Junior #Dana Grimm# and sophomore #Rheann Fall# recorded double-doubles with both finishing with 13 digs each and Fall notching 12 kills while Grimm dished out 28 assists. Sophomore #Dionna Lucas# racked up three aces along with 11 digs.
CSUMB hit .250 while holding the Toros to a .071 attack percentage.
The Otters took a 7-3 early lead, capped by a solo block by freshman
Lauren Ding. CSUDH would rally back to tie the set at 15 apiece. CSUMB answered by rattling off eight straight points, using two of the Lucas's three ace to pull away to 23-15. The Otters won the first set on a kill by Thomas.
After falling behind 5-2 after two consecutive attacking errors, the Otters equalized the second set at 7-7 on a kill by Ding. The Otters tied it the set for the last time on another Ding kill and pulled away to cruise to a 25-19 victory.
The third set began similar to the previous one until the midway point. At 10-9, CSUMB went on a nine-point run consisting of six kills and two aces by the Otters. The Toros never recovered as CSUMB completed the three-set sweep.
The Toros were led by Samantha Maxwell with nine kills while Ashley Clark added eight.
Next up for the Otters is a match-up against No. 4 UC San Diego on Friday, Oct. 2 in La Jolla at 7 p.m.
