CSUMB Clinches Overtime Victory In CCAA Opener

SEASIDE, Calif.
– Freshman Davion Berry scored a game-high 17 points as Cal State Monterey men's basketball team defeated Cal State Stanislaus, 73-67, in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener on Friday night at the Otter Sports Center.

“Big home win for us tonight,” said head coach #Rob Bishop#. “We were able to battle back after being down at halftime.

“This game will really help our confidence and growth down the stretch.”

CSUMB (2-2) handed the Warriors (4-1) its first loss of the season.

Senior #Keith Wilson# recorded 12 points and junior #Ian Hosford# added nine points and seven rebounds.  Senior #Sean Jergo# pulled down a team-high 10 points along with chipping in nine points. Freshman point guard #Brandon Ward# finished with eight points and dished out four assists.

In a game that changed leads 11 times and had 12 ties, it was the Otter who had enough to reach the finish line.

CSUMB saw its 14-5 lead slip away as the Warriors took a 34-29 lead into halftime.

A jumper by senior Shaun Williams gave the Otters their first lead of the second half, 36-35, at the 17 minute mark. 

Both teams traded leads with neither team taking a larger lead than four points.

CSUS's Jordan Stokes put up a layup to take a 61-59 lead at 54 seconds.

With 28 seconds remaining, Berry sunk a jumper to send the game into overtime at 61-61.

Freeman's two free throws gave the Otters a 63-61 lead, but a tip-in by Stokes tied the game at 63-63.

Jergo came up with a huge blocked shot to give the Warriors only three seconds on the shot clock at 3:12.

Berry connected on a jumper from the corner, 65-63.

A three-pointer by Ian Hosford extended the Otters lead to 68-64 with 1:04 on the clock.

After Hosford and #Jamelle Tolliver# each made one free throw, the Warriors closed the gap to 70-67.

Two free throws by Berry and one by Ward clinched the victory for the Otters at 73-67.

The Warriors won the battle of the boards, 44-36, but CSUMB forced 21 turnovers while making only 12.

“We have another tough home game tomorrow and I hope we will see even more fans tomorrow,” Bishop said. “We need to bring the same defensive effort tomorrow night.”

CSUMB welcomes Chico State to the Kelp Bed on Saturday, Dec. 5 with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
