CSUMB falls 5-1 in series finale against CSU San Bernardino

Pitching is solid but defense gives up more unearned runs than offense scores

SEASIDE --- Cal State Monterey Bay gave up three unearned runs in the top of the ninth and fell 5-1 on Sunday in its series finale with visiting CSU San Bernardino.

CSUMB starting pitcher #Lucas Allendorf# and CSUSB's Cheyne Hann (5-1) were locked in a pitchers' duel for the first seven innings. The Coyotes scored in the third inning when Allendorf walked two and gave up two hits, but an interference call on a Coyote runner helped limit the damage.

Allendorf (0-1) walked the first two batters of the eighth and was pulled for #Michael Trump#, who immediately induced a ground ball double play, but did allow one of the runners to get home later when Justin Watson singled to center field.

CSUMB responded with a rally in the bottom of the eighth. #Ryan Chagonjian# led off with a single to left field and #Brent Sargenti# singled up the middle to score the run.

But the Otters' defense came apart in the ninth of the ninth. CSUMB made three errors in the inning and the Coyotes cashed in with three unearned runs. That made the score 5-1 and it would be the final.

It was the Otters' final game of the season at their home park at the CSUMB Baseball Complex. They lost the series to the Coyotes 3-1 and are now 8-18 overall and 6-22 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Coyotes improved to 18-19 and 9-15.
