Baseball team swept by Chico, lose 14-0 in finale

CHICO, Calif. --- Chico scored nine runs in the first in the first three innings and tacked on several more for good measure, defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 14-0 on Saturday to finish a four-game sweep of the Otters.

Catcher Cody Dee became just the third player in Chico State history to hit for the cycle. He hit a solo homer, his seventh of the season, to lead off the second. He singled to center field in the third. He tripled off the top of the wall in center field in the sixth. And he doubled to right field in the eighth.

The Wildcats outscored the visiting Otters 57-10 over the four games. Chico State, which entered the series ranked No. 19 in the nation, has now won eight in a row to improve to 21-7 overall and 10-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Monterey Bay fell to 7-22 overall and 5-15 in the CCAA.

Kyle Gibson (1-1) collected the win in his first start of the season. He allowed just two hits and struck out six in five innings of work. Kyle Woodruff, Ivan Gonzalez, and Joel Garcia combined on four innings of relief to preserve the shutout.

#Matt DeJesus# went 2-for-3 to lead the Otters offense. CSU Monterey Bay starter #Charles Grosser# (1-4) took the loss in his first start of the season, surrendering seven earned runs on nine hits in two innings of work.
