ARCATA, Calif --- Seven proved to be an unlucky number for Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night as the Otters fell to Humboldt State 92-84, breaking a six-game winning streak that lifted the team from last place into the middle of the California Collegiate Athletic Association postseason picture.
The Lumberjacks' inside game overwhelmed the Otters, as CSUMB (8-13 overall and 7-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) was beat on the boards and pounded from inside the paint. HSU (15-7, 10-5) outrebounded CSUMB 44-24 and Devin Peale shot 11-14 from close range and scored 29 points to lead the Lumberjacks. Jameson Figgatt (7-9 for 16 points) also scored big beneath the bucket.
The Otters biggest inside presence, #Joe Mitchell#, who leads the CCAA in rebounds with 10.2 per game, sat out with a dislocated kneecap. His status is day to day, but he is expected to be healthy before the regular season ends.
Good outside shooting kept the Otters in it. CSUMB hit 15 of 39 three-point attempts. #Juston Willis# and# DShon Cannon# scored 17 points each and shot a combined 14 of 25 from the floor. The Otters trailed by as many as 14 but made a late run and trailed by three with about two minutes left. Unfortunately, two more inside buckets dropped them to seven back with 1:02 left. CSUMB then came out of a timeout and set up #Jose Sanchez# who nailed a trey and the Otters were down by four with 46 seconds left.
CSUMB quickly fouled and sent Will Scheuffelt (5-8, 17 points) to the line, but he hit both to put HSU ahead 88-82. Sanchez then missed a quick three-point try for the Otters, Peale grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and he drained his free throws to sink any hope of an Otters' victory. Both teams managed to score another two points in the closing seconds.
