CSUMB Closes 2007 Season With Series Sweep Over Cal Poly Pomona

[BOX SCORE GAME 1]
[BOX SCORE GAME 2]

CSU Monterey Bay celebrated Senior Day in a big way against Cal Poly Pomona. They pounded the Broncos 20-11 in the first game before holding on for a dramatic 4-3 victory in the nightcap. The Otters (19-33, 11-25 CCAA) have concluded the 2007 season.

In the first game, the Otters scored 15 straight runs to rally from a 3-0 1st inning hole, eventually breaking the school record for runs in a game set earlier this year at CSU Dominguez Hills. They also had a season-high 24 hits. The whole day gave the senior class a chance to shine. Gerry Rommel became the first Otter to have five hits in a game. Brian Trump went 2-3 and drove in 5 runs. Budd Glock went 3-4 with a home run. David Quintana and Rocky Russo also had home runs. Daniel Gomez became the first Otter to play every position in a single game, starting off at catcher and finishing at his regular short stop position after pitching the 8th inning.

In the second game, things got serious as the Broncos (17-31, 10-26) played like crazy to avoid the sweep and led for most of the game. They got a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning on a John Daniels 2-run home run. CSUMB scored 2 in the 6th on Glock's 2-run home run. However Cal Poly Pomona tied it at 3 with back-to-back hits in the 7th. That set the stage for the dramatic last at-bat of the year. After Nick Zaballos was thrown out at home and Gabe Chase grounded out, Nick Sanchez singled to bring home Quintana for the winning run. The four-game win streak gave the Otters their first-ever CCAA series sweep, and Glock had three home runs in the series to tie Zaballos' 2006 school record of nine round trippers in a season.
